Dear Prospective Students and/or Person Who is Obsessed With Reading Class Descriptions But Doesn’t Like to Sign up For Things (I see you. I will entice you.)

Have you been writing letters over quarantine that you feel a little scared, but also a little excited to read out loud? Did you recently write a letter to an alderman to demand the police be kicked out of CPS and felt so impressed by the pure vitriol in your language and fury in your metaphors, that you ended up thinking: God, I wish I could send a heavy metal song in the mail and demand that they listen to it in the background while reading this letter! It would really enhance it!  Have you ever wanted to thank a body of water, re-connect with your favorite character in a book from childhood or insult a tree? What anxieties have you wanted to share with a .99 cent thrift store toaster? Well…

I am teaching a 90 minute Neo-futurist workshop where you will get to experiment with all things in the Epistolary form! (That is a fancy three piece suit wearing, caviar eating, yacht owning word for “letter writing”. To be honest, I am not even sure I am using it correctly! Oops!). In this workshop, we will:

  1. Explore how the letter format employs the Neo-futurist aesthetic of immediacy in order to transform solo work into a sort-of solo/dialogue.
  2. Write and format letters as a way to develop an honest on stage/on film relationship to the audience, collaborators and yourselves.
  3. Discuss some staging and filming techniques that can be done to the letters and offer one another feedback and critique.
  4. Leave with *at least* one readable, perform-able, tangible letter and tons of inspiration of where to take it next.

Does that sound cool? I hope you’ll sign up.

Love,

Ida Elizabeth Cuttler

P.S. No previous letter writing or any writing experience is necessary to sign up!

P.P.S. My favorite character in a book is probably Wetziebat from the Francesca Lia Block series. I liked how *alternative* she was at age 14!

Class will be held online. Registration cutoff is at 6:00 PM on the day of class. Zoom link to be emailed by 6:30 PM on the day of class.
